How Lipstick Is Made
Throughout history, lipstick has been a symbol of femininity and power. It's also associated with witchcraft and prostitution. It has remained a timeless beauty category. Today, the lipstick comes in a wide variety of shades and formulas. You can choose from matte lipsticks, liquid lipsticks, and nudes.
Lipsticks are typically made from wax and oils. The oils add moisture and change the intensity of the lipstick formula. Common lipstick ingredients are vegetable oils, mineral oils, and castor oil. Lipsticks also contain emollients and preservatives. These are added to ensure the lipstick stays fresh and prevents bacteria and mold from growing. They also act as antioxidants to prevent the lipstick from going rancid.
In addition to wax and oils, lipsticks typically contain pigments. Pigments are colored powders that give lipstick its opacity and color. Depending on the manufacturer, pigments are usually derived from chemicals or from plant sources. Some lipsticks contain active ingredients such as skincare and sunscreen actives. They are usually listed at the end of the ingredients list.
During the manufacturing process, lipsticks are usually prepared in batches. Depending on the manufacturer's equipment, a batch may be produced manually or automatically. The volume produced may vary depending on the popularity of a particular shade.
The first step in lipstick manufacturing is to mix the ingredients. This process usually involves a roller mill, which breaks down the ingredients into smaller pieces and introduces air into the mixture. This gives the lipstick a smoother texture. The next step involves reworking the lipstick by hand or with a spatula. If a problem occurs, a producer may use vacuum equipment to remove air from the mixture.
After the lipstick is mixed, it is separated from the tube and cooled. This is important because if the mixture is hot, it can melt and squeeze the liquid oil out of the formula. If the mixture is cold, the ingredients will stay together.
Next, the waxes are added. The waxes are generally divided into waxy pastes and structured agents. The waxes must be soft enough to apply without effort but hard enough to stay on the lips. They also need to be able to form a solid structure. These waxes are often candelilla or carnauba. The melting points of these waxes range from 63 to 82 degrees Celsius. The higher the melting point, the more wax is used.
Once the ingredients are cooled, the lipstick is poured into the mold. The mold is usually made of metal and fits snugly with the tube. The lip gloss mass is then poured upside down into the mold. It is important to make sure that the lip gloss is not too thick and that the mold release is consistent. It should also come out of the mold easily.
Lipsticks are typically sold in a tubular container, which is usually 1.3 centimeters or 3 inches long. The tubes may vary in diameter. Some lipstick tubes are made from metal while others are made from plastic.
